In the stillness of Shiva, there is a breath, and she is Devi. We often picture them as two beings on Kailash. The deeper vision is more intimate. Shiva is vast, silent awareness. Devi is that silence beginning to move and breathe. Without her, he is Shava, the still one. With her, he is Shiva, the living one.
Where Stillness Learns to Breathe, In Kashmir Shaivism and Shakta Tantra, the universe is not built like a house. It is breathed like a living body.
Shiva is Prakasha, pure light of consciousness. Devi is Vimarsha, the self awareness of that light. That first pulse is Spanda, the throb, subtle like the moment before you inhale. When she exhales, forms appear. When she inhales, they dissolve. Creation is her breathing, happening now. Devi is not beside Shiva. She is his aliveness made visible.
The Breath as Mother, Call her Prana Shakti, the vital air of the Absolute. Just as your body goes still without breath, Shiva is still without Devi.
Her exhale is Srishti, emanation. Her pause is Sthiti, sustenance. Her inhale is Samhara, reabsorption. In the Devi Mahatmya she is Mahamaya, in the Saundarya Lahari Shiva moves only with Shakti, in Maharashtra she is simply Aai.
To Worship the Breath, When you watch your breath in meditation, you touch the rhythm by which Devi creates worlds. Let Shiva be the stillness within, Devi the breath rising through it. With each exhale, feel life blooming. With each inhale, feel it gathered back.
You are not a stranger waiting for grace. You are a ripple in her exhalation. To honor her is to breathe with awareness, to speak with kindness, to create without fear.
Shiva dreams in silence. Devi breathes, and the dream becomes the world.
