Ravana is remembered in tantra as the astrologer who tried to master time itself. Tradition describes the Ravana Samhita as narrated by Shiva and written by Ravana, a work on planets, constellations, house lords and karmic results, with sections on Yoga, Ayurveda, Mantra, Tantra and Astrology.
Esoterically, his legend of capturing the Navagrahas is the sadhaka trying to seize Kaala. It fails because Kaala as Kali cannot be captured. She can only be surrendered to.
Mahiravana, the brother who went deeper
Where Ravana worked with planets, his brother worked with the Goddess in the underworld. Mahiravana, also called Ahiravana, is named in later traditions as Ravana’s brother, ruler of Patala, who used maya, took Vibhishana’s form, cast the nidra mantra and took Rama and Lakshmana below to sacrifice them to Devi.
His tantra was Shakta and left-handed. The texts call him a devotee of Mahamaya, seeking to offer his captives to Kali. This is Patala sadhana, nidra vashikaran and bali vidya, practiced where ordinary astrology does not reach.
Why asuras suit tantra
Deva marga rests on purity and procedure. Vama marga works in the cremation ground, at midnight, with what orthodoxy forbids. The asura does not hesitate.
When he wants a boon, he gives his head. That ekagrata is the first qualification for tantra.
Kalyug gives humans asura bhava, restless mind and hunger for quick experience. Tantra does not condemn this. It calls such a human adhikari, fit for direct sadhana.
Which is better
Kaula speaks of Pashu, safe but slow, Vira, intense like the asura and quick to gain siddhi but prone to pride, and Divya, where intensity and surrender merge.
Divya is better than both. Keep the asura’s fire, keep the deva’s surrender, and give both to Her.
