The Power of Sanjeevani: 3 Mrityu-Tarana Mantras from Maha Narayana Upanishad
I am a Shaivite, walking the path of Akula from Kaula. My journey has always been about healing others – which led me from jnana to Kriya, deep into our scriptures and Tantra.
If you are a Sanatani, you must know this one Upanishad.
Maha Narayana Upanishad is the Mrityu-Tarana Upanishad. From Krishna Yajurveda, Taittiriya Aranyaka. Unlike other Upanishads that only speak of knowledge, this one gives you direct mantras to cross death while living. That’s why it is chanted at the time of death, during shraddha, and before sanyasa.
Here are the 3 core mantras:
1. The Mrita-Sanjivani – Maha Narayana Upanishad 56.1 / Rigveda 7.59.12
“Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Ma Amritat”
Like a ripe cucumber effortlessly freed from its stem, may Rudra free me from death, not from immortality. Its Devata is Rudra in his fiercest form – the conqueror of death.
2. The Tarana Mantra – Anuvaka 2
“Vedaham etam Purusham mahantam, Aditya varnam tamasah parastat
Tam eva viditva ati mrityum eti, Nanyah panthah vidyate ayanaya”
I have known that Great Being, brilliant like the Sun beyond all darkness. Only by knowing Him does one cross death. There is no other path. This is chanted when one is leaving the body.
3. The Shanti Mantra – For Peaceful Dissolution
“Ma nasta, ma mrisha, ma hinsa, ma me hinsih”
Don’t destroy me, don’t afflict me, don’t be angry with me.
Why it works?
It is a Kavach for Akaal Mrityu – for physical, mental health and longevity. And it beautifully connects Narayana + Rudra. It starts with Narayana as Brahman and ends with Rudra. So you get Vishnu’s protection for life, and Shiva’s power to conquer death.
Rudram bows to death in all forms, Maha Narayana says – cross over death by knowing the Light beyond darkness.
Simple 5-Minute Daily Prayoga:
Don’t chant the full 80 anuvakas without initiation. Just do this:
Morning (3x): Tam eva viditva ati mrityum eti…
Night (108x): Om Tryambakam… Mamritat
This is the Vedic way to lock your prana at night – so your energy, bhagya, and sleep are protected.
Har Har Mahadev.
